HOW TO NOT DISAPPEAR COMPLETELY: USING VIDEO-BASED DISCUSSIONS TO ENHANCE STUDENT SOCIAL PRESENCE IN AN ONLINE COURSE

This paper proposes a video-based discussion learning exercise to consider in addition the traditional online board format. While written interaction between students an classroom is beneficial, mass adoption of video technology, along with limitations associated boards, led development new way facilitate group communication using technology. Utilizing theory social presence, we demonstrate effectiveness this format, allowing virtually “get know” each other and collaborate environment that more closely resembles face-to-face experience. Following multiple trials synchronous discussions across both small large class sections, results students’ preferences for format over traditional, text-based boards supported by their institution’s management system. Findings from two studies support enhance outcomes foster sense community.
